Formatting Quotations // Formater les références

Section 1.8.2 of the McGill Cite Guide addresses how to format quotations. This section instructs authors to use square brackets in the following instances. (1) Whenever an addition to the text or correction is made ([t]he issue includes). (2) Whenever there is an error in the original material [sic]. (3) When italics are used to emphasize a point [emphasis added] or when the original includes an emphasis [emphasis in original]. (4)  When an author omits footnotes included in the original material [footnotes omitted]. In English, (3) and (4) are placed at the end of the citation, after the short form. In French, they are placed after the quotation itself. 

La section 1.8.2 du McGill Cite Guide traite de la manière de formater les références. Cette section indique aux auteurs d’utiliser des crochets dans les cas suivants. (1) Chaque fois qu’un ajout au texte ou qu’une correction est apportée (“[i]l s’agit notamment “). (2) Lorsqu’il y a une erreur dans le matériel original [sic]. (3) Lorsque l’italique est utilisé pour souligner un point [nos italiques] ou lorsque l’original comporte une accentuation [italiques dans l’original]. (4) Lorsqu’un auteur omet les notes de bas de page incluses dans le document original [notes omises]. En anglais, (3) et (4) sont placés à la fin de la référence. En français, ils sont placés après la citation elle-même.
